Smelly Washer - Review and Green Giveaway 1

We had a smelly washer problem at my house. It was horrible - I do 1 - 2 loads of laundry a day and cannot afford to have a mold problem. We first discovered we had the problem when loads of clean laundry starte smelling moldy. Eventually we had to run several empty cycles with bleach and hot water to get rid of the problem. Most of the clothes eventually lost the moldy smell but I had a brand new pair of jeans that I was not able to eliminate the moldy scent from and some of my towels still smell musty.

Right after that "experience" I found out about Smelly Washer on another blog. I immediately made note of the product and vowed never to have a smelly washer again. Thus, when the kind folks at Smelly Washer asked me to test their product I was all too pleased to say yes.

What did I like best about Smelly Washer
1) Smelly Washer Cleaner is the only washing machine cleaner on the market that is all natural according to their website. This is VERY important to me because I have changed all my laundry detergents to green ones and make my own vinegar based cleaning solution for around the home. I do NOT want to be dumping chemicals in our diminishing water supply.

2) It is very easy to use! You simply add 1 TBS (one cap) of the product to a hot water cycle either directly in the tub or through a dispenser. Start the cycle, let it agitate a couple of minutes and then let it sit overnight. In the morning then drain, rinse, drain in the morning.

3) It is effective! This really works - My washer smells clean! I think the bleach was effective in the interim but did not entirely remove the smell. ( I will be using Smelly Washer from now on.) You can also use this for routine maintenance.

Smelly Washer is also the only available washing machine cleaner that will remove mold odor from any towel or clothing that has picked up bad mildew smell from the washer. I did try this on my machine but did not get a change to try on my towels and pair of jeans yet. I will be doing that later this week. Since they towels and jeans are all dark I could not bleach them. This is a perfect solution. odor-removal-tips

What are some tips when using Smelly Washer Cleaner? - For more difficult cleanings if you're able to intermittently agitate it will disperse the cleaner again. Or you can reach inside the unit and manually turn the drum or agitator. Another tip is to add 1-3 gallons of hot water either through the door or detergent dispenser in order to raise the water level. Over the years of suds and soiled water splashing farther up the outer tub it can build up quite a layer of detergent/fungus. Keep in mind some higher-end units may go into an automatic drain if too much water is added.

Oooh..."Our cleaner is made from 100% all natural citrus based ingredients". I bet that smells really good....citrus scents are among my favorites! I'm glad to know this product is all natural, too; it makes me feel good about cleaning! (well kind of...I mean, it's still cleaning, right? What kind of crazy person loves to clean?)

I know that a front load washer smells moldy and fresh after using this.

I learned that The frequency of use depends upon the amount of detergent used, if fabric softener is used and the temperature of water generally used after cleaning your washer. That being stated - many customers like to do maintenance cycles. If any type of maintenance cycle is done only a half-teaspoon of SmellyWasher is needed in a normal hot soak to remove any residue.

Will Smelly Washer Cleaner remove mold from the door gasket? To remove mold from the door gasket you can mix a teaspoon of cleaner in a spray bottle with hot water and spray the affected areas liberally. Allow it to soak for a long period (even overnight) and the mold should easily be cleaned. Mold stains impregnated into the rubber may take repeated applications and/or vigorous scrubbing.

I learned a couple of things -- the first and most important being that you could buy washing machine cleaners. My old machine needs this, dreadfully.

I also learned that the scent may actually get worse the first time you clean it, because of the layers of mold. Yuck... but good to know.
