Guitar Hero, On Tour, Modern Hits - Review

I have heard nothing but great things about Guitar Hero, I have never personally tried it. I envied those who rocked out at Guitar Hero parties, tournies etc. I visioned myself a great guitar hero. Ok, not really but I thought it would be a blast.

We (I mean Santa) bought Guitar Hero, Legends of Rock for Miss C. who used to have her Nintendo DS attached to her hand . Now that she is a teen, she still plays with her DS but is more interested in socializing. I was assuming that she liked it but was not sure and kept forgetting to ask.

Now Niss N., who is 8, loves her Nintendo. She uses it every day (in moderation). I thought that as much as she LOVES her DS, she would love a new game.

I was given the opportunity to review Guitar Hero, On Tour, Decades AND Guitar Hero: On Tour, Modern Hits. We were asked to try the two player mode but that never happened. Miss C.'s DS apparently is dying and we could not get the keyboard part to dock in. As an alternative we played both versions on Miss N.'s DS and plan to try and replace Miss C.'s (it is an original DS and has seen better days).

I was the most excited to try this and the very worst player. My kids definitely kicked my butt in Guitar Hero. I played Decades and they played Modern Hits.

It did not matter what version I tried or what level - I stunk.... I tried again today with a new song and did a little better. Even though I never made it past level 1, I managed to raise my score from the teens to 46%. I also was able to repair a couple of guitar strings, play at hyperspeed and avoid "bombs". Despite these accomplishments on my part, I am fairly confident that the Foo Fighters would not be impressed.
Will that stop me from playing? Nope.

On his first attempt my husband made it to level 2. That is all I am going to say on that matter.

My kids actually did pretty good - well one of them anyway.... Miss C. found that the easy level was too easy and the expert level was much to difficult but did good with the medium level. Miss N. may have been too young for this. She definitely performed much better than I did but also was frustrated when playing it. Part of that is age and part of that is Miss N's disposition. We frequently have to cut game time short because of this problem.

I think overall this is a great product. Once we replace Miss C.'s DS the kids should take more of an interest in playing since they can play against one another live. I was very disappointed we were not able to get this to work. We are entertaining this weekend and I will be asking our neighbor to bring his DS over so we can try the 2 player mode with all of the kids.
